messenger

Lately I've been working through the Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs by Abelson, Sussman, and Sussman, to try to learn about programming and computer science.

I just finished section 2.2, where they introduce a "picture language" for making Escher-type designs from picture elements called painters. So I was inspired to try to make my own. I'm not sure if I could add colours to the pictures in the Scheme compiler I'm using so I made up analogous functions in Pygame (and then I added in the background gradient afterwards).

Australian Women Writers challenge

I don't write much, but I read a lot. I'm always afraid of saying or writing the wrong thing, so I tend to keep this blog wordless. Nevertheless I've decided to try the 2012 Australian Women Writers Challenge.

I'm just doing the lowest level of the challenge, Stella, which as I understand it, means that I will attempt to read 3 books by Australian women next year and write a review of at least two of them here. Budgetary constraints mean that I will be restricted to library books, so I guess I'll just see what is there.

I guess this probably isn't how it really happens.

Just a rabbit

I haven't been putting pictures on my blog lately.  I want to try again, so to break the ice there's this picture of a rabbit that I drew yesterday.  I've been drawing rabbits a lot lately.  I like sketching the photos on the The Daily Bunny website in the evenings.

remedy

The quote this week was: "To do nothing is sometimes a good remedy" by Hippocrates.
I don't think this is what he meant, but I took it literally - and drew someone laying in the grass doing nothing, as a remedy against whatever troubles them.

Owl & Pussycat II

I made a vector version of the picture of the owl and pussycat.

I've been wanting to make a Threadless design for ages, so I put this in the critiques section.  People were really nice with their comments - they pointed out that the cat didn't have a tail before!  It seemed so obvious once they pointed it out but I had been oblivious until then.   So that was good.  I'm not sure if it is worthy of actually submitting,  but I enjoyed making the attempt.  I think I will keep working at it and wait until I get a better idea.

Owl & Pussycat

I've been doing a short course about children's book illustration.
This week we painted a watercolour picture from The Owl and the Pussycat
(or else our own story).  I did the bit where they danced by the
light of the moon.

I'm pretty new to watercolour so I learnt some new techniques.
One was to use a candle to make the stripes on a cat.
The other was to use a dip pen to do the outlines because you can
do it wet-on-wet to make it go fuzzy.  So that was fun and
I'm pretty happy with it.  I'm not sure now whether I want to do
the rest of the story now or else do my own (a love story between traffic signals).

lesson

I haven't submitted an Illustration Friday picture for over a month now, because I was having trouble thinking of good ideas.  So this week I decided to just draw the first idea I had - an old toy rabbit teaching the new ones about life as a toy rabbit.

(It's what lots of kids at my local cafe seem to play with.)

swarm

I wasn't sure which category to put this in.  I meant it to be coloured pencils, but then I took the photo in yellow light so played around with Photoshop so long it's kind of digital.

The kind you want to keep wearing when you spill your drink on it.

surrender

I had no idea what to put for this topic.  While running the other day I saw a bird sitting on a power-line in the hole where a tree had been cut - a lot of paperbark trees in my area have had holes cut in them to leave space for power-lines and I thought it was a bit like the bird had surrendered to the changes in its home in some sort of way.  It's a bit of a stretch.  :)

This is more of a sketch than a real picture, due to starting it too late.  I didn't want to miss the deadline again.

dusty

The toys are planning their escape from the dusty cupboard. I did this picture for Illustration Friday but once again I am late. It's with oil pastels and some Photoshop dust.

This is really late, but I guess late is better than never.
